I'll bite.  I just found out about Southern Maine  Wargaming from bobs's post, sounds great.  I game with a small group at Crossroad games in Standish( yeah I know closer to western ME)  We meet every Thursday 6pm and game a variety of historical games. This week its a Fow  paratrooper meeting of the 501st regt 101st  and the 6th Fallschirmjagerregiment at St. Come-Du-Mont. Walk ins are welcome Brendan and Chris run a friendly shop and have plenty of room for us to play in.

Bob, any more info about the group? could you come by and visit us at Crossroad some Thursday evening? We are actively trying to reach out and game with more folks down here.

Wayne,
Let me check-in with my chief-of-staff (aka the wife) and see if I can't get down there this Thursday night (should be there 5ish).  I'll try again to get my buddy to come down to the store, too.  Which game are you planning?
Regards,

Folks-
Howdy.  My name is Tony Rieger and I'm the VP on the Southern Maine Historical Wargaming Group.
My buddy Larry irish is the Pres. but as well know these duties are largely ceremonial in wargaming clubs. ;-) ;-)

We have about 30 or so folks on our current Yahoo list, but about 20 are what i would consider 'active' members and
about 12 actually meet at game days on a regular basis.

If you'd like to join our group, just send me an e-mail with your name ... and your addy. I will then go to the site and send
you an 'invite' so you can join in. We post regularly, so its not a dead site with the occasional posting. We set up a time
and place to meet at least once every month.

This is my personal addy:
trieger@maine.rr.com (Tony Rieger)

The reason we do not have our group posted to the 'general' web is (1) avoid spam (2) we wanted to talk to folks we had a
chance to actually game with. its nice to chat to folks in Finland about wargaming, but the chance of setting up a game is ..
er .. not likely, if you know what i mean. This 'group' of folks you know, might know, or could know at some point.

I joined this group because I was made aware by one of our mutual contacts here, Chris Boynton. he told me about the
convention that this club set up this spring. We all felt it would be ideal if all the folks involved in both groups (and more
for that matter) could work together on such things. We know there are allot of wargamers in Maine, but its a big state
and can be hard to network. It seemed a shame for us all to be really into the same hobbies, but we're all separated
by physical space and a lack of knowing of, or connecting with, the other groups that exist.

So ... I will try to more regularly visit this space and keep up on whats going on. I hope we can all keep in touch with
what we're doing and let others know. i will certainly do my best to act as a liaison between the groups, in much the
same way Chris boynton has in the past. i am glad to be here, and looking forward to talking to, and meeting you all.

Location

I did not answer the original 'location' question.

Our 'club' Southern Maine Historical Wargaming Group does not have a roof.
We meet where ever we can. We have folks as far away as NH and some folks are
about an hour from each other (and this is just 'Southern Maine' and doubtful it is all
the gamers in the area!) So trying to find 'one' meeting spot is hard as its often far away
from 'someone' in the group. Finding a location is also difficult because there are so few
'clubs' or stores in the area that are able (or will) support having club games and
meetings at.
We used to meet at Crossroad Games once a moth regularly, but it got to the point where the
Magic The Gathering meets grew and were often conflicting with our meets there. There just
wasn't enough spaces, lights, chairs etc. to facilitate two club meetings with 20+ people per
group. That siad, Brenden and Chris are GREAT people at Crossroad games and the shop
is quite large and its a good space. If we had any hope of playing there again on Sunday's
with regularity, without fear of bumping another paying hobby off the tables, we would be
more than glad to hook up there again.

What our club does now is we talk on our message board and meet at one of the member's
homes once every sunday (most of us folks are dad's with all that comes with that. Sunday's
seem to have proven to be the only day that works for all the folks in our group). We often meet
the 'second to last' sunday, but that said ... we let the majority vote rule the direction of day we
can all meet. For example, this month the 13th is the day. Apparently too much was going on
the 20th for folks to meet. But if you join up and let us know what works for you, you can certainly
be one of the folks who 'tips the balance' of when and where the official 'meet' for that month will be.

I hope that helped out.

The "historical" people who meet at CrossRoad Games in Standish have taken over tuesday nights as their preferred night for games.  I was there this past tuesday (for terrain repair for the upcoming DDay event, and played disposable heroes (28mm WWII), other games going on were WWII naval actions in the Pacific...

I'll be in Maine the next couple of months and looking for some gaming.

I did the Wargaming run today and stopped by the Gaming Geek in South Portland, and the Crossroads gaming shop in Standish.

I ran into Chris who helped me out with the scene here in Maine for wargamming.

I'll probably check out the Historical group that meets at the Crossroads store on Tuesdays.

Chris did mention that there are quite a few Battleground players around. I'd always be up for a game of that.

Hello.
I'm a bit further afield. I'm in Bangor.

Our group (The Society of "Other-Maine" Miniature Enthusiasts, SOMME) meets one Saturday per month, usually the second Saturday, at the Forest Avenue Congregational Church in Bangor. It's on the corner of Forest and Stillwater Avenues. Since I'm the pastor, I can usually get the hall.

Usual turnout for a game is about 6, with as few as 2 and as many as 12 having showed. We play most all periods, with a mix of rules even for a given period. Recently, Command Decision and my house rules have been the mainstays with Fire and Fury and another gamer's house naval rules also in evidence, but there are many others as well.

I will be at the Game Day in October and will try for Huzzah! in the spring. I'm a tax accountant and trying to get gigs as an adjunct history instructor, so my schedule is undetermined at this point for that far out.

We have GMs that are tightly historical in what they do (trying to stay with historical battles) and others like myself who will create a likely scenario that works with units that existed at the time, but the place and situation are more imaginary.

Matt,

The Battleground players are primarily in the Portland area and get together once a month, third Sunday of the month, I believe.  July was rocky with other schedule issues so they did not meet but they probably will in August.  I'll get you come contact info.

Thanks Dean.

I did get to check out the gaming at the Crossroads in Standish last Tuesday.

Like many historical clubs the turnout was small but the group was fanatical. A couple games of Wings of War WWII was played, and played and played(long game).  Wings of War is fun and usually quick game.

We also got into a WWII skirmish game using the rules "Disposable Heroes". The little that I played showed me it is a really simple skirmish game that mostly makes sense.  I hesitate on systems that don't encorporate a opportunity fire mechanism. What I really liked about it was the vhicle rules. We had one tank and it really down plays the sighting ability of vehicles whic hI think make much sense in skirmish games. I figure a tank that is near enemy troops is in the wrong place and should suffer for it.

A good time was had and I will be back next week for some more WWII skirmish fighting.

Thanks again Matt for jumping in, good to hear that you had a good time.  The WOW thing went way to long but neither of us would give in, it did show me the need to use the fuel rules Smiley  A 30 + minute turning battle between a Spitfire and Bf 109 it to much that 109 was never gowning to get home.

As for Iron Ivan's DH it dose indeed have over watch its called snap fire. Theirs also a optional trip wire rule that works  well its just that your Platoon leader forgot them. I do like the fact that vehicles are clearly meant to be supporting elements at the skirmish level and don't overwhelm the game.
The big reason for gowning with DH was that we have a limited time to game on week nights and its a fast paced fun system that's surprisingly balanced.
